Anecdote

Friends are the ones you can count on. Whether they're making you laugh or simply listening to what you have to say, they're always there.

Once, a certain friend of mine truly made my day. We were at a back-to-school dance, enjoying ourselves (as much as you really can at a school dance).  Sixth and seventh graders are running around, doing all sorts of childish things. We would dance, relax for a second, maybe grab a soda, and continue dancing. All sorts of music popular among us "tweens" was playing in the background. There were teachers and chaperones monitoring everything and making sure it's all "appropriate."

So my friend is doing all sorts of different dance moves.  While doing so, she starts moving towards this one chaperone without knowing it.  Her back was facing this large, tall man.  Eventually, her back side comes in contact with him.  Both of them realized at about the same time. The expression of initial shock on their faces was priceless. Her face quickly grew red with embarrassment.  Then, she apologized hastily and returned to our group. I was too busy cracking up to really comfort her at the moment.  However, being the good sport that she is, she too, was able to laugh it off.

Every now and then, I'll mention it to her and she either laugh or get embarrassed. Overall, my friend learned that you should make sure you have plenty of room to dance and that you should always be conscious of the direction you're moving when you "boogie down."

Joke

No offense to blondes. This obviously isn't true. It's a stereotype:

An airline captain was breaking in a new blonde stewardess. The route they were flying had a layover in another city. Upon their arrival, the captain showed the stewardess the best place for airline personnel to eat, shop and stay overnight.

The next morning, as the pilot was preparing the crew for the day's route, he noticed the new stewardess was missing. He knew which room she was in at the hotel and called her up wondering what happened. She answered the phone, crying, and said she couldn't get out of her room. "You can't get out of your room?" the captain asked, "Why not?"

The stewardess replied: "There are only three doors in here," she sobbed, "one is the bathroom, one is the closet, and one has a sign on it that says 'Do Not Disturb'!"

This joke is fairly self-explanatory,  Usually when staying at a hotel, room service leaves a "Do Not Disturb" sign on the inside of the door and you can put it on the outside if you want.  Therefore, when the blonde sees the sign on the inside of the door, she thinks someone is telling her to not use that door.  She tries the bathroom door and the closet door, but doesn't check the one door that leads out of the room.  Therefore, she thinks she is trapped in her room.

Hunger in Africa

“Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity; it is an act of justice.” – Nelson Mandela

Stats:
About 38 million people in Africa are currently suffering from hunger.
Every 3.6 seconds, someone in the world dies from starvation.
1 in 12 people worldwide are malnourished.
Hunger is considered the number 1 health risk in the world.
Africa is the poorest continent in the world.
1 in 7 people will go to bed hungry tonight.
The Horn of Africa is where most famine is occurring on the continent.
Hunger kills more than AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria combined.
Africans who suffer from poverty usually depend on their subsistence farms, but they're not self-sufficient due to the lack of fertile land.

aklgjaskdgendleisn

uhm....I don't know what to do for my dialogue of repartee.  I can be witty but it has to be real, in an actual conversation. I'm not sure I can come up with little characters and a scenario. I looked up examples of repartee and one tells of a time someone asked Jennifer Lopez what she got on her SATs and she said nail polish. hahah how clever.(:

Barack Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize in 2009

Barack Obama (USA) was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for "his efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples." He also encouraged a world free of nuclear weapons and created a new climate for international politics. Not only did he strengthen democracy and human rights, but he also serves as a symbol of hope to people all over the world. Another fundamental that he advocates is that world leaders must govern in a way that is based on the thoughts, beliefs, and attitude of the majority of the world's population. His actions are global since he's working on international issues. I definitely think that war (US v.s. Iraq and Afghanistan) was part of his motivation to take action against serious problems. Obama prefers to call what he did to help a "call to action.". He was able to spread awareness about these multiple issues through his government position and the presidential campaign. Learning about his Nobel Peace Prize inspired me and made me respect him more. Through the media, you see a lot of criticism because many people disagree with his choices made as the president of the United States. I, however, can understand that he is under a lot of pressure and while he makes these important decisions, he won't be able to please everyone. Yet through it all, he is still able to do remarkable things with his influence on the world, such as supporting a world where there are no nuclear weapons and leaders govern by voicing the concerns and beliefs of most of the world's population. So to conclude things, even though Obama is stressed and often receives criticism, he is still working to make the world a better place. That's how he won the Nobel Peace Prize. And that's also how he inspires me.

Keeping it Real - On the Topic of Bullying

Quote:

"Thou shalt not be a victim, thou shalt not be a perpetrator, but, above all, thou shalt not be a bystander." - Yehuda Bauer

This quote is definitely one that applies to bullying. I believe it means that you shouldn't let it happen to you, you shouldn't join in on the problem, but most importantly, you can't watch it happen to others and not speak up. We learned in school that anyone who witnesses bullying and doesn't do anything about it (ie. tell an adult) becomes part of the problem, which only makes it worse.

Bullying Poll:

I would like to thank everyone who took the time to answer the questions about bullying.

About 47 people answered each question. Here are the majorities:

30 voters (63%) claim answered that they have not been a victim of bullying at some point during the school year.
26 people (54%) said that bullying is not an issue at their school.
39 people (63%) claim that most witnesses/bystanders tend to simply ignore bullying when it is happening.
45% or 25 people say that they have seen others bullied this school year.
32 voters (69%) said that they have not yet been bullied this school year.

While I'm glad that the majority of people who voted have not been bullied, I know that we can't forget about the minority. As long as someone is being bullied, it remains an issue that needs to be resolved. If you want to see the full results, go to my homepage and they will be displayed on your right-hand side.

Quote

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." - George Santayna, philosopher and critic
I think that they were trying to explain that if we can't learn from the mistakes we made in the past (the Holocaust), then our generation could have an event, such as a genocide, just as awful as that notorious extermination.
Children suffer from the Genocide in Darfur.
Many villages in Darfur are set on fire.

Children suffer from the Holocaust

A sign that promises remembrance of the Holocaust.

As you examine these pictures, you can see some similarities, which means our generation is making the same mistakes as the previous did. There are several genocides occurring today, most of which are in Africa. If we do not end them, they could grow to be just as horrific as the Holocaust, killing millions of innocent people. That's why we must take action. http://www.stopbashir.org/?rc=stopbashir_e1
